HOW TO STUDY THE WORD (2)
From the previous lesson, I mentioned that there are FOUR ways in which people study the word based on the mindset with which they approach the scripture. These include STUDYING (READING) THROUGH, STUDYING TO KNOW, STUDYING TO PREACH and STUDYING TO PRACTICE. The first two was discussed extensively in the previous lesson, so let's go through the last two.
3. STUDYING TO PREACH
This approach comes to play when people study the word with a sole mindset of preaching to others. By doing this, they make themselves a means that carries the word from the scripture to the listeners without the word having any impact in their own lives. They study with the mindset to preach, why studying, their heart isn't open to learn from the Holy spirit, but to teach others. Nowadays, men are more ready to preach than to learn. There are many preachers that lack the listening ears, its either they are right or no one else is. They might even preach wonderfully, but their life isn't imparted by the word they claim to carry.
"So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach." Matthew 23:3 NIV
The bible instruct us to do what they say but not what they do because indeed they study the word, but they don't practise what they preach. They indeed preach the truth, but their life isn't impacted by the word. The are not conforming to the word they claim to carry. When you study to preach, you leave yourself out of the equation.
Whenever a preacher preaches, there are three group of people that should be edified, the preacher himself, the people he is preaching to and the passersby who just by chance hears the word and receive conviction by the Holy spirit. These three group of people must be edified. But when your intention is just to preach, you leave your self out of the equation. They preach the word and reveal the secret things in the word but there is no power to back it up. Even Jesus backed up His ministrations with signs and wonders. His life was a practical demonstration of what the scripture says. We have to be the same. Don't just study to preach.
"having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." 2 Timothy 3:5 NIV
Even the scripture warned us not to associate with those that have a form of godliness but are denying the power. When you study to preach but do not do what it says thereby having no access to the power embedded in the word, no manifestation of what the word in your life, then you are denying the power in it.
One of the best ways to preach is to make your life a living testimony, when people see what the message you are preaching has done (or is doing) in your life, they will be more wiling to accept what you preach, and eager to be a doer of the word like you. Let you life show forth the glory of God that men will come to your light. Remember ye are the light of the world.
