BURN THE BRIDGES
“10
Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you,
forsaking our God and serving the Baals."
11
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the
Philistines, 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you
and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? 13 But you
have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you. 14 Go and
cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in
trouble!"

But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever
you think best, but please rescue us now." 16 Then they got rid of the
foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery
no longer.”
The
children of Israel abandoned God to worship idols and foreign gods, so
God gave them over to the Philistines and Ammonites to oppress them for
eighteen years until they couldn’t endure anymore and decided to go
back to God and seek His face.
From
the passage, the children of Israel cried unto God for mercy but were initially
rejected by God, but they were persistent in seeking his mercy, THEY GOT RID OF
ALL THE IDOLS FROM THEIR MIDST AND SERVE THE LORD SINCERELY until He decided to
have compassion on them.
‘Burning
the bridges’ means destroying any route that is capable of taking one back to
sin. The Israelites in that passage got rid of all the idols they worshiped, they
burnt the bridges that could take them back to their old life, and God raised a savior
for them. Before the idols were destroyed, the Lord told them to go to their
idols to save them from the oppressors, but after the idols were destroyed, the
Lord knew they were ready to serve Him wholeheartedly.
Were
you a fornicator and after repentance you still hang around with opposite sex?
Were you a smoker or drunkard and after repentance you still associate with
other smokers and drunkards? Were you a pornographic addict and after
repentance you still keep those applications and browsers that gave you full
and easy access to pornography? Why not burn the bridges that can take you back
to your Old life so the devil won’t
exploit those routes to get at you.
One
of the most important steps in breaking an addiction is doing away with those
things that can trigger such addiction. YOU CANT KEEP A FLOOD OF PETROL/GASOLINE
INSIDE THE HOUSE AND YOU CONTINUE PrAYING TO GOD AGAINST FIRE OUTBREAK.
As
a believer or a new convert, you have to cutoff every link to your Old life.
“Therefore,
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new” 2 Cor. 5:17KJV
The
Old life has passed away and should not be revisited again, break every route that
can still take you back. You have to separate yourself from anything or
anyone that can take you back to your vomit and you have to consecrate yourself to God.
“Wherefore
come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you,” 2 Cor 6:17 KJV
‘Burning
the bridges’ is the major attribute of true repentance. Burn the bridges today
and God will give Himself completely to you.
