THE GREAT SHEPHERD PART 3
HIS ROLES
In the last lesson, we discussed three roles of a shepherd taking our reference from Psalm 23. In continuation, more of his roles are illustrated below;
-HE PROTECTS HIS SHEEP
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies ..." Psalms 23:4-5 KJV
A shepherd protects the sheep, as far as the shepherd is around, the sheep has nothing to fear because all their trust lies in the shepherd. When the shepherd is for any reason unavailable, the sheep wander in fear but as far as he is around, the sheep has no fear. So also the Lord is the protector of his people. He protects them from all seen and unseen battles, he protects them from all physically and spiritual predators. Our God is a shepherd that keep is own safe. He keeps us under His wings and allow us to abide under his shadows where we can neither be moved nor touched. The presence of God comforts us because we know as far as He is with us, no evil can overcome us.
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart" Psalm 91:4 NIV
-HE BEAUTIFIES AND EMPOWERS THE SHEEP
" ... thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over." Psalms 23:5 KJV
A shepherd constantly rub the sheep with oil which act as a repellant for flies. This prevent flies and bugs from infesting the skin, ears, and nostrils of the sheep. If not done, the flies could infest and lay eggs on those body parts and there is high possibility of disease outbreaks among the sheep. Same ways our Lord anoints us with the Holy ghost and power to protects us from the activities of demons, principalities and powers. The anointing prevent us from being a victim of demonic possession and oppression. Also, through the anointing, we demonstrate the delivering power of God even in the lives of other people. The Lord beautifies and empowers us to show forth His glory because we are carriers of His power.
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." John 14:12 KJV
-HE ABIDES WITH THE SHEEP
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalms 23:6 KJV
A shepherd always abides with his sheep, also the Lord desires to abide with us and us with Him. Having seeing the benefits attached to making the Lord you shepherd, won't you want to be a part of His sheepfold. He is a faithful shepherd, and He is calling unto you today, JESUS IS CALLING YOU.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 NIV
