TONGUES OF FIRE
TONGUES OF FIRE
"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said". Acts 10:44, 46 NIV
Praying in unknown tongues is an evidence that a believer has been baptized of the Holy spirit, but only few knows its significance which in turn limits the manifestation of the power embedded in it. When we have full knowledge about the virtues of God, then we are open to the possibilities they bring through our faith.
Why then do we pray in tongues?
1. IT EDIFIES THE SPIRIT
"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself"
1 Corinthians 14:4 KJV
To edify means to build, to improve. Praying in tongues build up our spirits. It charge and lift up our spirit whenever we are down due to one reason or the other, it is a means of recharging our spiritual battery. The more we pray in tongues, the more our spiritual virtues (like faith) grow, the more our spiritual senses sharpens, the more we operate spiritual gifts with divine accuracy. Praying in tongues empowers us. It open us to the power house of God and impartation by the Holy spirit. The more we pray in tongues, the "hotter" we become, making us a terror to the enemy
2. IT ENABLES US TO PRAY ARIGHT (EVEN WHEN WE DON'T KNOW THE RIGHT PRAYERS TO PRAY)
"For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful." 1 Corinthians 14:14 KJV
When we pray in tongues, it is the spirit that prays, the mind (understanding) isn't involved. Many a times due a dream or vision, we have the urge to pray but aren't really sure of the particular prayer points to pray, instead of beating about the bush, pray in in tongues hit the nail on the head. Our mind cannot generate the right prayers to pray, but by praying in tongues, the Holy spirit himself prays through you.
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Romans 8:26 KJV
As we connect to the Holy spirit praying in tongues, He takes controls and prays through us, and before we know it, the case is settled.
We pray in tongues for the purpose of accuracy.
3. IT KEEPS THE DEVIL IN DARKNESS ABOUT OUR REQUEST
"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices." 2 Corinthians 2:11 KJV
One of the ways the devil hijack the answers to the prayer of a believer is to offer him a false answer which without discernment and patience, one would think it is from God. When the devil is ignorant of our requests, it will be difficult for him to hijack the answers.
4. IT IS A MEANS OF FELLOWSHIP WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
Praying in tongues is one of the ways we fellowship with the Holy spirit because we speak the His language. Praying in tongues brings us to a high level of intimacy with the Holy spirit.
5. IT IS A SIGN TO THE UNBELIEVERS
"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not" 1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV
Praying in tongues is a sign unto the unbelievers to see the glory of God. When the apostles receive the baptism of the Holy spirit, and spoke with diverse tongues, the people marvelled at what they were seeing and hearing.
"And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?" Acts 2:12 KJV
Praying in tongues is more or less a way of shining the light. Jesus told us to shine our lights that all men will see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Praying in tongues is a gift from God given for a purpose. Explore it and see the power embedded in it unravelled in your life.
