THE GIFT OF DISCERNING OF SPIRITS
To discern means ability to judge or distinguish. Discerning of spirits can then be said to be the act of judging or distinguishing the spirit influence behind occurrences and manifestations. The divine empowerment by the Holy spirit to do this is what is called the gift of discerning of spirits.
"Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour." Acts 16:16-18 NKJV
The slave girl wasn't speaking against the apostles, she was actually encouraging others to listen to them, but Apostle Paul discerned she was possessed by the spirit of divination. Many a times we judge base on appearance, who is supporting us or not, but many have been fooled.
"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light." II Corinthians 11:13-14 NKJV
Even the devil can disguise himself as an angel of light. This is the era of false prophets, they are at loose because this is the end time. So believers have to be at alert and spiritually sensitive to discern as the Holy spirit inspires. Not all that appears good is really good, not all that glitters is gold, Jesus has said that by their fruits, we shall know them.
"Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed." John 8:31 NKJV
Remember Jesus said those that are his will always listen to Him and do what He says, but there are masters of disguise that can only be exposed by the gifts of discerning of spirits.
Through the gift of discerning spirits, the Holy spirit reveals to you the spirit source of every works. We are able to know if it is of God or not.
