THE GIFT OF DIVERS KIND OF TONGUES
The gift of divers kind of tongues as well as gift of prophecy and gift of interpretation of tongues belong to the group of spiritual gifts known as the Vocal gifts, speaking gifts or utterance gifts because their manifestations or operations lies in inspired utterances.
The gift of divers kind of tongues is an inspired utterance given by the Holy spirit. 'Divers' means there are many or diversities of tongues (or languages), which are given unto men by the Holy spirit as He wills. The divers kind of tongues are classified into two groups;
-THE UNKNOWN TONGUE
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1 Corinthians 14:2 KJV
These are inspired tongues, languages or utterances that no man understand. It is also referred to as the tongues of angels according to I cor. 13:1. This tongue is unknown to man but known to God. By speaking in an unknown tongue, one speak mysteries (deep secrets) unto God even without the understanding of the speaker, this also enable a believer to access the deep things of God.
"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself ...." 1 Corinthians 14:4 KJV
Speaking in an unknown tongue enable us to edifies, build, improve our spirit. It improves the spirit and all the spiritual endowment God has bestowed upon us. It is also a means of communion with the Holy spirit because it is the heavenly language. It also keeps us charged at all time and opens us up into the realm of the supernatural.
-THE OTHER TONGUES
This is the second category of tongue that is also referred to as the tongues of men. With the inspiration of the Holy spirit, a believer is able to communicate in a tongue (language of men) he has never learnt or spoken before. This is one gift common among evangelists, which enable them to preach the word or minister unto men of different tongue or language other than the minister.
"When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?" Acts 2:6-8 NIV
Initially, the disciples of Jesus were heard praying in Galileans, when the Holy spirit came upon them, they began to speak in other tongues (languages), and the people gathered amazed because they all heard their native languages spoken by the disciples and about three thousand men were saved that day.
"Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." 1 Corinthians 14:39-40 NIV
