THE GIFT OF PROPHECY
THE GIFT OF PROPHECY
To prophesy means to foretell, to predict, to prefigure as moved or inspired by the Holy spirit. The gift of prophecy is a divine enablement to have access to things of the future, to foretell the things to come as inspired by the Holy spirit. One who possesses this gift has the ability to declare things of future occurrence, they have access to the things God has in mind to do later in the future.
Everyone functioning in the prophetic office by calling is expected to possess this gift, but not all that operate this gift necessarily is a prophet. It is a grace God has given us especially in this dispensation, giving us access into the future, declaring the will of God on the things to come upon the earth.
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions" Joel 2:28 KJV
Prophesy is mainly for the edification of the church. It reveals the mind of God to the people, it brings hope, builds faith and brings the unruly back to order.
The gift of prophesy has two divine abilities with respect to its mode of operation; the revelatory ability and the creating ability.
THE REVELATORY ABILITY OF PROPHECY
"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14 KJV
The operation of prophesy can be revelatory in nature, it can reveals what is going to happen in the future as revealed by the Holy spirit. Prophet Isaiah was one of the prophets that foretold the coming of the messiah and His birth through a virgin. This he said as revealed unto him by the spirit of God and it came to past many years after. This operation expresses the foretelling power of prophecy.
THE CREATING ABILITY OF PROPHECY
"Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord ; Thus saith the Lord , To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria." 2 Kings 7:1 KJV
Prophesy can also be creative in operation. In this, by the power of God as inspired by the Holy spirit, the spoken word creates the occurrence. Elisha wouldn't have necessarily seen a vision but spoke the word of prophecy, and the power of God created the word which he spoke and it came to pass. The word of God have creative ability, through it, all things were made, so also the word of a prophet or anyone gifted with prophecy as inspired by the Holy spirit creates the desired result once spoken. Elisha spoke, and it was manifested.
