ABEL'S OFFERING OR CAIN'S
ABEL'S OFFERING OR CAIN'S
"And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast." Genesis 4:4-5 NIV
From the passage above, The sons of Adam (Cain and Abel) decided to offer unto God out of the abundance of their wealth. Cain was a tiller of the soil while Abel was a rearer of flocks of sheep. Out of what they have, they brought unto God to offer unto Him, but only Abel's offering was accepted. Why was the offering of Cain rejected? In contrast to many teachings that Cain brought forward rotten crops to offer unto God, no where in the scripture was it mentioned that Cain brought rotten crops, so why was his offering rejected?
Let's imagine a renowned spiritual or political leader decided to visit you in your home, and being the guest, he requested a glass of water, while bringing the glass of water, can u imagine the joy in your heart, so much that you can feel your heart jumping, can you imagine the reverence in your heart, can you imaging the pleasure, the joy, the number of times you'll bow or bend to kneel, can u imagine how much you see it as a privilege, but when it comes to giving God your offering in church, you walk majestically to the offering box, drop the squeezed or torn note as if you are giving to a begger, then turn back shabbily to your seat. Is that how you give to the All sufficient God.
“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty. “It is you priests who show contempt for my name. “But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?"Malachi 1:6 NIV
Abel knew he was coming to honour the Lord, he gave with reverence and fear of God, with joy and passion in his heart, this made him offer one of the fattest of the firstborn of his flock, he honoured the Lord even in his heart, giving unto God, not of necessity but out of love and high regard. Cain on the other side came as a normal routine to give something or anything, he did what many are doing today, picked out of his crops and just brought them forward to God without any reverence for God in his heart.
"But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others." Mark 12:42-43 NIV
Even with the rich coming in their wealth to offer unto God, Jesus said this poor widow gave the best because she gave all she had out of nothing. The truth is, can this woman really give all she have when not sure of the God she is coming to give. She came with total reverence and honour in her heart. Jesus saw her heart, it was filled with awe for God. She honoured God with her little. Have you been honouring God indeed with your offerings? Have you been giving like Cain did or like Abel did? What is the state of your heart whenever you claim to give to God?
.......GOD BLESS YOU
